Their Eyes Were Watching God
7-12
This scene takes place between pages 94 and 99. Here, Janie has her first real encounter with Tea Cake. Right after Joe’s death, Janie takes over the store. The scene takes place at the store when everyone else is attending the baseball game. It has been almost nine months since Joe’s death. Here, Janie meets Tea Cake and is drawn to him because of the way he makes her feel. Tea Cake teaches her something no one has ever allowed or asked her to do; he teaches her how to play checkers. This brings out the child in Janie, and she likes it because she was married when she was young and missed her childhood years. In her first marriage, she was treated like property and did not get to experience any fun or true happiness, so she is easily drawn to Tea Cake because he makes her feel young again. In this scene they flirt and bond as they play the game. Later it becomes clear that Tea Cake has changed her for the better and true love develops between the two of then.

"Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly." (page 1).
When it says that for some thier wishes come in it means that thier wish that was on the boat came true. But for some men there dreams never come true. Because the boat never lands so they never come true. But for women they are different then men. They only remember what they want to. They fallow there dreams.

Miss watson is a prim and proper lady and she wants others to be the same. So being as she is she trying to make Huck clean cut. So she cleans of the grease and clay from his clothes.
"But tom wanted to RESK it..."p18
Mark Twain in the book uses misspelling to get across a point. It in a way shows date and area cause it takes place in the south so the speack will be wrong. And at this time most people were not well educated.
"everybody was willing." p19
Toms group of friends are tight they are not very well educated. But its is good that they are able to unify into one whole group. And Tom and Huch really stepped up.

"'Quick, Jim, it ain't no time for fooling around and moaning"pg77
Huck is trying to make jim move cause huk wants to go. So he pushes Jim a bit to get him going. And in a way it works to get jim movin.
"you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes..."
Mark twain makes reference to the word nigger which at that time was mean. It was a common word back then, but today it is a very heavy word which could get u into troble. And so you get a sence of the way people are towards black people back then.
"Goodness gracious, is dat you, Huck?" p89
After the storm the raft was in bad shape. With huck almost drownding. Jim was happy to see he was alright.

good man
"Nothing can be done, you know, until I get on the ground."
This quote is saying he is waiting for the right time to arise. it also sheds light on the circle of life. He is living in a particular moment that is bad and he wants to stop and begin a new.But he must learn to deal with and accept it to make it better.
“there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree.”
What he is trying to say is that there always is going to be something that will threaten you. So u have to work hard to try and prevent anything from happening to you. Cause there could be trouble lurking ahead of you behind a tree.

emily
i think there are some parts that support the idea of Emily being transcendentalism. Like "When it comes the landscape listens,..." this shows the idea of nature which is the idea of transcendentalism. There are all sorts of references to nature like with grass, daffodils, and snakes this supports transcendentalism.

Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)
He is talking about the way he keeps disagreeing with what he says. he says how The condition or quality of being numerous. and what he does shows he doesn't care about what he is contradicting himself.
The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and my loitering.
He hints in this one at the thought of Nature. He says that the hawk does this becasue of him talking and loitering. and this is imposible for an animel to talk to a person.

Quote for Black veil
pg52 "But what has good Parson Hooper got upon his face?" This shows the time era. Because they are not used to it. And it shows something about the Puritan religion. He is doing something different.

Thoreau
pg 25 "Every man is tasked to make his life, even in its details, worthy of the contemplations of his most elevated and critical hour."
What he is getting at is that you have to create your own life. Not to try and make your life like someone elses. If you do this you will be better off, this is what he is saying.
Pg 25 "We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake,"
Thoreau is saying that we have to come out of the fog of life. And not just live life with the same routine. He says to not us mechanical because that is still mainstream culture. He wants us to refer back to nature the natural way to be awake.
Pg 24 " the morning, which is the most memorable season of the day, is the awakening hour."
He states that during this time there is a part of us that "awakens" for an hour and sleeps the rest of the time. You are exiting the sleeping stage and enter into the fog of the day. This does not happen allot because the mechanical side of life keeps it away but in nature it can happen more often.

quotes
July 26 pg49 "By my intimacy with nature I find myself withdrawn from man."
This quote further prove his belief in nature. It shows that he is getting out of main stream culture. He has a deeper connection with nature then most people.
April 12 pg 47 " I would preserve purity in act and thought, as I would cherish the memory of my mother."
This quote showes that he is clinging to his mother. which Emerson said that to become self reliant you have to not be clingy to someone or something. But when he says he would I get the image that he isn't he is just stating what he would do.
July 27 pg 49 "The grandest picture in the world is the sunset sky."
He once again makes a nature reference. But not many people take the time to notice and appreciate the sunset which has been painted before us. He says that if you are out in nature and you are out of main stream culture you can appreciate these things.

"few adult persons can see nature" this is because only few people acutually see the beauty of nature the rest are in the main stream and dont pay attention to nature.
"...remembrance of the city of God which has been shown!" he is saying that there is a connection between nature and god
"trust thyself" this supports the idea of belive in yourself and then you can be self reliant.
"...it is easy in solitude to live after our own." this shows that it is not hard to step back from main stream America and look farther and look inside yourself.
